George Clooney is backing Jimmy Kimmel after the late-night host came under fire for a Melania Trump joke that Donald Trump called a “despicable call to violence.”

Kimmel, 58, sparked backlash after joking on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ that Melania had “a glow like an expectant widow.” The segment aired before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where gunfire later erupted near a security checkpoint.

Trump, 79, has since demanded that Kimmel be fired by Disney and ABC.

Clooney, however, defended Kimmel while speaking at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala on April 27, where he was being honored for his career.

Clooney Says ‘Jokes Are Jokes’

Clooney argued that Kimmel is a comedian and that jokes should be treated as jokes, though he also warned that political rhetoric in general has become too heated.

“Jimmy’s a comedian,” Clooney said. “And I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired. She was making a joke. Fair enough.”

Leavitt had told Fox News before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that “there will be some shots fired tonight in the room,” referring to prepared jokes for the event.

Clooney said the same standard should apply broadly.

“You look at that side and go, ‘Well, jokes are jokes,’” he said. “But the rhetoric is a little dangerous. And we’ve seen it a lot lately.”

Clooney Warned Political Language Is Getting Too Heated

Clooney did not fully dismiss the concern around public language. Instead, he said the tone across politics needs to cool down.

He suggested Republican figures could be more careful with exaggerated language and said phrases like Leavitt’s “can be toned down.”

Then he widened the point.

“When one side is calling anyone they disagree with traitors to the country, which is a charge that’s punishable by death, just because they don’t agree with someone, I think the rhetoric is a little too heated,” Clooney said.

His defense of Kimmel was blunt, but it was not a free pass for everyone. Clooney’s argument was that comedy, political attacks, and violent language are being mixed together in a way that makes every public line more explosive.

Trump Demanded Kimmel Be Fired

Trump blasted Kimmel in a furious X post after the joke spread online.

“Wow, Jimmy Kimmel, who is in no way funny as attested to by his terrible Television Ratings, made a statement on his Show that is really shocking,” Trump wrote.

He accused Kimmel of using a fake video involving Melania and Barron Trump, then quoted the “expectant widow” joke.

Trump connected the comment to the later security scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he said a suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives.

“I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence,” Trump wrote, adding that Kimmel “should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”

Kimmel has faced intense criticism before, but Clooney’s defense gives the controversy a new Hollywood layer. For Clooney, the line is clear: Kimmel told a joke. The bigger problem, he says, is the political climate around it.
