Taylor Swift turned teenage frustration into one of the biggest songs of her career.
The singer recently opened up about the origin of ‘Love Story,’ revealing that the 2008 hit came from being angry at her parents, Andrea and Scott Swift, for refusing to let her date an older guy.
Swift was 17 at the time, sitting in her bedroom and feeling misunderstood. That moment became one of her earliest signature songs.
“I think the first time I felt I don’t care if people hate this because I love it so much was when I wrote the song ‘Love Story’ when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents because they wouldn’t let me go on a date with a guy who was too old so I shouldn’t have been on a date with him anyway,” Swift said.
Then she turned the story into a parenting joke. “And this is why you need to discipline your kids because they might write songs that go [to] No. 1,” she quipped.
‘Love Story’ Came From A Romance That Never Really Happened
‘Love Story’ was released in 2008 as the lead single from Swift’s second studio album, ‘Fearless.’ The song became one of the defining tracks of her early career and helped push her from country breakout to mainstream force.
Swift has spoken before about the song’s inspiration. In 2009, she said it was about someone she almost dated, but her family and friends did not approve.
“All of them!” Swift said at the time. “For the first time, I could relate to that Romeo-and-Juliet situation where the only people who wanted them to be together were them.”
The twist is that the romance never fully became a relationship.
Swift once called ‘Love Story’ “the most romantic song I’ve written,” even though it was about someone she never actually dated.
Swift Says Young Feelings Hit Differently
Swift said writing in the middle of big emotions helped her, especially early in her career.
“I have this very strong opinion that when you’re young, you feel things on such an intense and detailed level,” she said.
She described the 17-to-22 age range as a period when longing can feel all-consuming. “There’s an attention to detail when you’re 17-22 years old and you’re longing or you’re reaching and grasping but you’re never holding someone’s attention or someone’s love or someone’s dedication,” Swift said. “You can’t understand why you spend all day thinking about it.”
That emotional intensity became the fuel behind many of her early songs.
The Bedroom Song Became A Career Milestone
Swift has said she wrote ‘Love Story’ on her bedroom floor in about 20 minutes.
“When I get on a roll with something, it’s really hard for me to put it down unfinished,” she said.
That quick burst of teenage anger became one of her most recognizable songs and a permanent fan favorite.
Swift was recently named by ‘The New York Times’ as one of the greatest living American songwriters, alongside names including Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Lionel Richie, Carole King, Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon.
Not bad for a song that started with a 17-year-old being told no.
