King Charles III got the royal treatment in Washington, but his state dinner speech may have given the internet something better: a surprisingly sharp comedy set.

The King appeared at a White House state dinner during his U.S. visit and delivered a string of jokes aimed at American history, Donald Trump’s White House renovations and even one of Trump’s own comments about Europe.

The punchlines quickly spread online, mostly because viewers were convinced Trump was laughing without fully catching the digs.

As one person summed it up: “Today’s main takeaway is King Charles III is actually very funny.”

Charles Took A Swing At The Boston Tea Party

The King started safely enough by thanking Trump and Melania for the dinner. Then came the first joke.

“Thank you, Mr. President and Mrs. Trump, for your splendid dinner this evening, which, may I say, is a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party,” Charles said.

That line went over well online because it turned one of America’s most famous anti-British moments into a polite dinner joke.

One viewer wrote, “Boston Tea Party in shambles after that burn.”

It was classic British humor: dry, historical and just sharp enough to sting if you were paying attention.

The White House Ballroom Joke Got Even Sharper

Charles then turned to Trump’s White House changes, including the east wing and the new ballroom chatter.

“On this occasion, I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr. President,” Charles said, before adding that Britain had once made its own “small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814.”

That was a reference to British forces setting fire to the White House during the War of 1812.

The joke landed hard online. One commenter wrote, “i already know every joke he’s telling is going completely over trump’s head.”

The French Joke Went Viral

The most discussed joke came when Charles responded to Trump’s past claim that without the United States, European countries would be speaking German.

“You recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German,” Charles said. “Dare I say that if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.”

That one even got a reaction from French President Emmanuel Macron, who tweeted, “That would be chic!”

Political commentator Mehdi Hasan also weighed in, writing, “The best part of this joke is that Trump is laughing but I bet he doesn’t understand it.”

The internet clearly loved the idea of Charles quietly roasting Trump in full diplomatic mode. The jokes were polite enough for a state dinner, but pointed enough for social media to treat them like royal shade.
