Tom Cruise is not jumping out of planes this time. He is turning into something much stranger. At CinemaCon, the actor unveiled the first real look at ‘Digger’, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming dark comedy, and the big surprise was just how far Cruise seems to have pushed the transformation. The footage showed him as Digger Rockwell, an aging, erratic billionaire with thinning white hair, facial wrinkles, and the kind of worn-down look that barely resembles the usual Cruise image. The film is set for an October 2, 2026 theatrical release.
Iñárritu did not undersell what Cruise pulled off here. Introducing the footage, he said, “Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that,” and described the performance as “another kind of fearless,” separate from the stunt-heavy reputation Cruise already has. Cruise, for his part, called the movie “wild” and “funny,” while later saying on Instagram that he and Iñárritu had a blast sharing the sneak peek and could not wait to release the film in October.

Tom Cruise’s New Look Changes the Whole Pitch
The big hook is the makeover. According to reports from CinemaCon, Cruise appears older and physically altered through prosthetics, old-age makeup, and a hairpiece. That alone gives ‘Digger’ a different kind of attention, because Cruise usually sells intensity through motion, polish, and control. Here, the play seems to be messier and more character-driven.
The footage also gave a first look at Digger Rockwell’s world. He is described as gruff with nearly everyone except his elderly cat, while his giant drilling company appears to trigger a crisis that puts millions at risk. Warner Bros. has framed the project as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions,” which points to something darker and weirder than a typical prestige drama.

Why ‘Digger’ Feels Like a Different Kind of Tom Cruise Bet
That may be what makes the movie so interesting. This is Cruise moving away from the familiar action-machine mode and into an ensemble satire with Iñárritu, whose recent English-language films include ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’. Reported cast members include Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
So the story out of CinemaCon was not just that Cruise showed up. It was that he showed up looking almost unrecognizable, playing a character who sounds volatile, ridiculous, and dangerous all at once. For a star this associated with control, that is enough to make people stare.
