Ryan Gosling just gave NASA’s Artemis II crew a very Hollywood send-off, and the timing could not have been better.

As the world watched NASA prepare for its historic Moon mission on Wednesday, the ‘Project Hail Mary’ star popped up on the agency’s livestream with a message for the astronauts about to make history. Gosling, who plays a man sent into space to help save Earth in the new sci-fi film, kept it simple, warm, and surprisingly moving.

“Hi everyone, I’m Ryan Gosling, and I play a biologist who goes to space to save the planet in the film ‘Project Hail Mary,’” he said. Then came the line that gave the moment some real weight: “But the Artemis II astronauts are going to space for real, and they will travel farther from Earth than any humans in history. Sending all our best wishes to the Artemis II crew.”

That alone would have been enough to get people talking. But the crossover between a major space movie and a real Moon mission gave the whole thing an extra spark.

Ryan Gosling’s Space Movie Moment Got Very Real

There was already plenty of buzz around ‘Project Hail Mary’, which landed in theaters just over a week before Artemis II’s launch window opened. So when Gosling appeared on NASA’s livestream ahead of launch, it felt like pop culture and real science had collided at exactly the right moment.

And then the mission actually took off.

The spacecraft launched successfully from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida shortly after 6:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, turning an already big movie tie-in into something much bigger. Suddenly, Gosling was not just promoting a film about going to space. He was saluting a crew about to do the real thing.

Meet The Four Astronauts Headed Around The Moon

The Artemis II crew includes four astronauts from the United States and Canada, all set to fly around the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft during the 10-day mission. It marks the first time humans will head back to the Moon in more than 50 years, which is why the attention around this launch has been massive.

The crew includes commander Reid Wiseman, a NASA astronaut from Baltimore who last went to space in 2014 on a Russian Soyuz mission to the International Space Station. Pilot Victor Glover, from Pomona, California, previously flew to space in 2020 on a SpaceX mission to the station.

Mission specialist Christina Koch is also on board. The NASA astronaut from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is already known for setting multiple agency records and previously flew in 2019 on a Soyuz mission to the ISS. Then there is Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who is making his first trip to space as a mission specialist.

That lineup alone would have made headlines. Add Ryan Gosling into the mix, and the story suddenly gets a little more star power.

For fans of ‘Project Hail Mary’, the moment was a neat full-circle beat. For space fans, it was a reminder that no movie can top the real thing. And for everyone else, it was one of those rare pop culture moments that actually felt sincere.
