Even in a room full of A-listers, there’s apparently one name that makes everyone freeze, and it’s Adele. Sarah Michelle Gellar just shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes parenting moment, revealing that she and Reese Witherspoon were simply too nervous to ask the global superstar for something as normal as a kids’ play date.
Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum said her son Rocky, now 13, went to preschool with Adele’s son Angelo. Like any group of kids, they quickly became friends and wanted to hang out outside of school. The only problem? Figuring out which parent would actually make the call.
“They all wanted a play date, and everyone was like, ‘Who’s gonna call Adele?’” Gellar said, describing the awkward standoff among parents. She admitted she immediately removed herself from the situation, joking, “Not it, not it, not it!”
Naturally, all eyes turned to Reese Witherspoon, arguably one of the biggest stars in the room. But even she wasn’t ready to step up. Gellar recalled nudging her co-parent in the classroom, only for Witherspoon to shut it down just as fast. “She’s like, ‘I don’t want to ask Adele!’” Gellar said, adding that no one wanted to be the one to make that move.
The missed opportunity eventually faded when Adele and her son moved back to London. Gellar remembered the moment vividly, saying Adele came into the classroom to say goodbye, bringing gifts and sharing the news with the kids. Her own son came home casually mentioning that “his mom came to school,” leaving the parents stunned they had missed it.
Looking back, Gellar made it clear there was no reason to be intimidated. She described Adele as warm and kind during their brief interactions, even if the parents couldn’t get past their nerves at the time. As Gellar’s story makes clear, even Hollywood’s biggest names can feel a little starstruck, especially when it comes to asking Adele for something as simple as a play date.
