Daniel Radcliffe is reportedly considering becoming an American citizen after living in the United States full time for several years.
The Harry Potter star said he has been based in the U.S. since 2020, after spending nearly a decade splitting his time between the United Kingdom and America.
Radcliffe currently holds a Green Card, which allows him to live and work permanently in the country. However, he must wait several years before he becomes eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship.
“I pursued a Green Card because my son is American, and I need the flexibility to be here whenever necessary,” Radcliffe said during an appearance on Bustle’s One Nightstand series.
He added that living in the country without citizenship sometimes feels limiting.
“It’s a strangely powerless feeling not being able to engage in the political process,” the actor said.
Radcliffe has been in a relationship with American actress Erin Darke since 2012. The couple welcomed their first child, a son, in April 2023.
During the interview, Radcliffe also spoke about his hopes for his child’s future and suggested he would prefer his son not follow him into the acting industry.
“I’d prefer my child not follow in my footsteps for various reasons,” the 36-year-old actor said.
One reason, he explained, would be avoiding the “nepo baby” label often applied to children of celebrities who enter the same profession.
“If he becomes a tree surgeon or something entirely different, there won’t be any comparisons between us,” Radcliffe said.
The actor acknowledged that some children of famous figures have managed to build careers in entertainment despite the criticism.
“These so-called ‘nepo babies’ just need to improve their response to the question,” he said, pointing to examples of actors who openly acknowledge their family connections.
Radcliffe is currently appearing on Broadway in the one-man stage production Every Brilliant Thing, continuing his run of theater work alongside his film and television roles.
