Jack White has responded to the backlash surrounding comments he made about Taylor Swift’s songwriting style, clarifying his remarks after they sparked debate online.

The former White Stripes frontman addressed the controversy in a statement posted to Instagram. The message was later deleted, but not before fans and media outlets circulated screenshots of his explanation.

White wrote that his comments had been misrepresented and denied calling Swift’s music “boring,” a phrase that spread widely across social media following the interview.

In the statement, White explained that his original remarks were about his own creative preferences rather than criticism of Swift’s work.

According to White, he was discussing poetry and songwriting during the interview and describing why he personally prefers writing through fictional characters rather than directly about his own life experiences.

“I never said Taylor Swift’s music was ‘boring’ or any other clickbait nonsense the internet is trying to generate,” White wrote in the now-deleted post.

The controversy began after White commented in an interview that it has become common for pop artists to write songs inspired by highly publicized breakups, referencing Swift’s style of storytelling.

White said that approach simply does not appeal to him as a writer, explaining that he prefers creating characters and narratives rather than drawing directly from his personal life.

Despite the clarification, White acknowledged that Swift’s songwriting approach clearly resonates with a large audience.

He added that artists should pursue the style that works best for them, noting that Swift’s music continues to connect strongly with listeners around the world.
