Robert Carradine, the actor known to millions as the lovable dad on Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire and the nerdy hero of the cult comedy Revenge of the Nerds, has died at 71. His family confirmed that the veteran performer had struggled with bipolar disorder for decades. Following the news, tributes quickly poured in from former co-stars and fans who remembered the warmth and humor he brought to the screen.
Hilary Duff, who played his daughter on Lizzie McGuire, shared an emotional message on Instagram, writing that the loss “hurts” and recalling how Carradine always made her feel supported and cared for while filming the show. Jake Thomas, who portrayed her younger brother Matt on the series, also honored the late actor, describing him as talented, grounded, and deeply devoted to family.
Carradine was born Robert Reed Carradine on March 24, 1954, in Los Angeles into one of Hollywood’s most famous acting families. His father was legendary character actor John Carradine, and his siblings included actors Keith and Christopher Carradine, along with half-brothers Bruce and David Carradine. Despite the family’s Hollywood pedigree, his childhood was far from easy, marked by a difficult custody battle between his parents that left him and his brothers briefly placed in a home for abused children.
As a teenager growing up in Laurel Canyon, Carradine developed interests outside of acting, including race-car driving and music. He even performed in a band with his half-brother David, playing gigs across Los Angeles and San Francisco. Still, Hollywood eventually called, and Carradine made his film debut in 1972’s The Cowboys, starring John Wayne.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, he built a reputation as a reliable character actor with roles in films such as Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, the Vietnam War drama Coming Home, and the WWII epic The Big Red One. But it was 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds that turned him into a pop culture icon. Playing Lewis Skolnick, the awkward but determined fraternity leader, Carradine helped launch one of the most recognizable comedy franchises of the decade, eventually returning for three sequels.
Two decades later, Carradine introduced himself to a whole new generation of viewers as Sam McGuire on the hit Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. From 2001 to 2004, he played the supportive father to Duff’s title character and reprised the role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Over the years, he also appeared on numerous television shows including ER, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Celebrity Wife Swap, demonstrating his versatility across comedy, drama, and reality TV.
Carradine is survived by three children, including actress Ever Carradine, as well as a large extended family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. His career spanned more than five decades, leaving a mark on both cult movie fans and a generation of Disney viewers who grew up watching him as one of television’s most memorable dads.
