Martin Short is mourning the devastating loss of his daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, whose death at age 42 has left the family in deep grief. Following the news, the beloved comedian postponed a scheduled comedy performance with longtime collaborator Steve Martin as the family asked for privacy during an incredibly difficult time.
A representative for Short confirmed Katherine’s passing on February 24, describing the family as “profoundly saddened.” The tragedy prompted the postponement of Short’s planned show in Milwaukee on February 27. Fans were told the performance would be rescheduled at a later date.
Katherine was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, actress Nancy Dolman. Born in December 1983, she grew up largely outside the spotlight despite her father’s fame in Hollywood. Family representatives described her as deeply loved and remembered her for the warmth and joy she brought to those around her.
According to reports citing law enforcement sources, authorities responded to Katherine’s residence in the Hollywood Hills on the evening of February 24. Officials have not publicly released many details about the circumstances surrounding her death, and the family has asked for privacy while they grieve.
Despite growing up in an entertainment family, Katherine chose a career focused on helping others. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender and sexuality studies from New York University in 2006 before completing a master’s degree in social work at the University of Southern California in 2010.
After finishing graduate school, Katherine worked at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital for several years, where she supported patients in a clinical mental health setting. Later, she established a private practice as a licensed clinical social worker and was involved with Bring Change to Mind, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
Martin Short has often spoken publicly about his children with pride. In past interviews, he described them as the most important part of his life, frequently emphasizing the close bond within the family.
Katherine is survived by her father and her two brothers, Henry and Oliver. While the Short family has not shared further details about the tragedy, they expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support while asking for space to process their loss.
