Following the death of actor Eric Dane at age 53 after a battle with ALS, questions have resurfaced about his relationship with actress Rebecca Gayheart and whether the couple had separated before his diagnosis. The Grey’s Anatomy star and Gayheart had a complicated marital history that included a divorce filing years earlier—but their story ultimately took a different turn during the final chapter of Dane’s life.
Dane and Gayheart married in 2004 and share two daughters, Billie and Georgia. In 2018, Gayheart filed for divorce after 14 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, the filing suggested the couple was heading toward a permanent split, though both remained committed to co-parenting their children and maintaining a respectful relationship.
Over the following years, however, the pair appeared to maintain a close bond despite their separation. They were occasionally spotted together publicly and continued to prioritize family life. Friends close to the couple described their relationship as unusually supportive for a separated pair, emphasizing that they remained deeply connected through their children.
In March 2025—just weeks before Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis—Gayheart made a surprising move by asking a court to dismiss the divorce filing. Around the same time, she spoke openly about their relationship, describing Dane as her “best friend” and emphasizing that they had found a way to remain a strong family unit despite past difficulties.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurological disease that gradually destroys the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As the condition advances, patients often lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe independently. Dane revealed his diagnosis in April 2025 and became an advocate for ALS awareness during the final months of his life.
Despite his health struggles, Dane remained surrounded by family. When his death was announced on February 19, 2026, his family said he passed away with loved ones by his side, including Gayheart and their daughters. The statement highlighted the closeness that remained between them even after years of public speculation about their marriage.
Rather than a story of abandonment or separation during illness, Dane’s final year reflected a different reality. Though their marriage had once been headed toward divorce, Gayheart ultimately withdrew the filing, and the two continued supporting each other as a family. In the end, their relationship appeared to evolve into a partnership rooted in friendship, parenting, and shared history.
