Harrison Ford just shared the surprisingly simple rule that’s helped keep his nearly 16-year marriage to Calista Flockhart strong—and it might not be what you’d expect from a Hollywood legend.
While walking the red carpet at the 2026 Actor Awards in Los Angeles on March 1, the 83-year-old icon opened up about life with the Ally McBeal star. Asked about the secret to their lasting relationship, Ford didn’t hesitate.
“I don’t tell my wife what to do,” he said with a smile.
And apparently, that philosophy applies to everything—including work. When asked whether Flockhart, 61, might ever appear on his Apple TV+ series Shrinking, Ford made it clear the decision wouldn’t be his. “That would be entirely up to her,” he said.
Later that evening, Ford was honored with SAG-AFTRA’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award—and the night turned emotional fast. During his heartfelt eight-minute acceptance speech, he reflected on his decades-long career and the gratitude he feels for still doing what he loves.
“Sometimes we create entertainment; sometimes we create art. Occasionally, we’re lucky enough to do both,” he told the audience. “And if we’re really lucky, we get to make a living at it.”
But it was his tribute to Flockhart that truly stole the spotlight. Ford thanked his “extraordinary, beautiful wife” and credited her—and his family—for giving him the love and courage to keep going. As he spoke, cameras caught Flockhart in the audience, visibly emotional.
The couple first met at the 2002 Golden Globes and tied the knot in 2010. This June, they’ll celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary.
Ford has spoken candidly in recent years about love, aging, and the work it takes to maintain a relationship. During a 2025 interview on NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin, he pushed back against the idea that romance belongs only to the young.
“Old people can love, too,” he said, adding that staying in love requires daily effort. “It’s about maintaining, nurturing, and essentially not screwing things up,” he joked, noting there can be “some days off for bad behavior.”
When asked how long he’s been married to Flockhart, Ford once quipped, “If you ask me, I’d say all my life.” He’s also openly reflected on marrying young—he wed his first wife at 23—and has said that finding love later in life didn’t surprise him at all.
For one of Hollywood’s most enduring leading men, it turns out the real adventure isn’t on screen—it’s knowing when to step back and let your partner shine.
