Could Meryl Streep return from beyond the grave in Mamma Mia 3? According to a top studio executive, the door isn’t closed.

Streep famously played Donna Sheridan in the original Mamma Mia film, captivating audiences as the spirited hotel owner and single mother. However, in 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, it was revealed that Donna had died prior to the events of the sequel—though details surrounding her passing were never fully explained.

Now, with a third installment officially in development, NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley has fueled speculation about a possible comeback. “If Meryl Streep would like to come back, we’ll find a way to bring her back,” Langley said when asked about the Oscar winner reprising her role.

Langley also confirmed that the project is moving forward, stating, “Yes, I’m going to say right now that there will be a Mamma Mia 3.” Still, she cautioned that the film remains in early development stages, and no release timeline has been announced.

Meanwhile, Amanda Seyfried—who portrays Sophie—has previously suggested that her character could take center stage in the next chapter. Whether Donna returns in flashbacks, dream sequences, or another creative twist remains to be seen, but fans clearly aren’t ready to say “Thank You for the Music” just yet.
