Netflix global phenomenon Squid Game is gearing up for an American adaptation. Industry outlets including Collider reported that the Film and Television Industry Alliance FTIA has listed Squid Game America as an upcoming project. According to the FTIA website, production is scheduled to begin on February 26 2026 in Los Angeles. The project credits include original creator Hwang Dong Hyuk alongside acclaimed director David Fincher.

This new project is positioned as a spin-off rather than a direct remake, aiming to retain the original universe while reimagining how the lethal games might unfold in an American setting.
Collider reported that although David Fincher has not confirmed his participation, this marks the most significant update on the American adaptation in months, with the outlet suggesting a possible Christmas 2028 release to match the holiday season premieres of the first two seasons.
After the release of Season 2 in June, Hwang Dong Hyuk dismissed rumors of his involvement in a U.S. version and denied claims about a December Hollywood shoot with Cate Blanchett. He added that he is a longtime admirer of Fincher and would seriously consider the opportunity if approached.
Fincher remains one of Hollywoods most influential directors, known for films such as Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Social Network, earning three Academy Award nominations for Best Director.
