Legendary reggae singer and actor Jimmy Cliff has died at the age of 81, his wife Latifa Chambers announced on social media.
Latifa Chambers shared the heartbreaking news on Jimmy Cliff’s official Instagram account on Monday, writing, “It is with profound sorrow that I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, due to pneumonia. Rest in peace, my darling Jimmy.”
The two-time Grammy Award-winning musician was renowned for his chart-topping hits, including “I Can See Clearly Now,” which became the theme song for the 1994 film Cool Runnings, and “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”
Jimmy Cliff made his mark in cinema as well, starring in the groundbreaking 1972 Jamaican film The Harder They Come. The movie and its titular song are widely credited with bringing reggae music to a global audience.
Recognized as a reggae icon alongside Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff was honored with Jamaica’s Order of Merit. His influence on music was further cemented when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
